Mason Greenwood, a striker for Manchester United, spent Monday night in Cheshire partying with Teden Mengi in an effort to forget about the tough two weeks that had just passed.

The teenage striker was casually dressed in a white T-shirt and black shorts while out shopping in Alderley Edge. His team lost their first Premier League game, 3-1 against Crystal Palace just two days earlier.

Both 18 years old, Mengi and Greenwood spent the day traveling. A baseball cap and sneakers were the finishing touches on his laid-back getup. After a difficult two weeks, during which Greenwood was kicked off of Gareth Southgate’s England squad for breaking the team’s strict quarantine protocols, Greenwood delivered a great performance. The striker and fellow English rookie Phil Foden were sent home after it was revealed that they had conspired to commit a match fixing act. After breaking the bio bubble set up to safeguard England players in Reykjavik, the player received a public scolding from Southgate and a Football Association inquiry.

Solskjr replied, “Yes, of course I talk to Mason, and I have talked to Mason.” Nothing we talk about will ever be shared with anybody else. The year was fantastic for the kid. Just now did he arrive. The club and I, together with the rest of the staff, put in a lot of hours.

We gave Mason ample playing time and announced it to the media. Then, after only a short break, he was called up to the national squad at the end of the season.

“I have to be honest and say that I did everything I could over the summer to give him a vacation. That we were interrogated by the club and urged to take a break. After that season, he needs it to restore his body and mind. After being summoned, he becomes the focus of intense media attention.

Greenwood and his side had their poorest start to a Premier League season in 25 years. They lost again on Saturday.

They played Crystal Palace, a team from south London, at Old Trafford. Many predicted victory, but they were defeated 3–0, with two of the goals coming from Wilfried Zaha (a former player for Manchester United).
