As Southampton is “confident” of recovering the roughly £50 million cost of Romeo Lavia, it appears unlikely that the Reds and Southampton will be able to come to terms on a deal this summer.
The midfielder has been the subject of much discussion lately, and according to recent rumors, Liverpool now considers him to be their top target as they start their summer rebuild.
One of the “current crop” will have to go, according to James Pearce and Raphael Honigstein of The Athletic, and Belgian writer Sacha Tavolieri disclosed this week that negotiations over a potential move to Anfield are “advancing well.”
Russell Martin, the manager of Southampton, recently appeared to be resigned to losing some of his key players this summer, but it appears the Saints aren’t eager to let their guy go for a pittance.
In addition to Liverpool, Lavia has drawn interest from other Premier League powerhouses like Chelsea, Arsenal, and even the teen’s former team, Man City.
The Reds may struggle to finalize a deal for the 19-year-old after learning that Southampton are “confident” of fetching £50 million for him, claims Melissa Reddy of Sky Sports.
Lavia is the third player Liverpool has signed this summer, but in order to do so, “there would need to be a significant dent in Southampton’s asking price for the Belgium international, who would also need to make clear Anfield is his destination of choice,” according to Reddy.
The report states: “Liverpool’s approach this summer has been to extract value for the right profile despite an inflated market and pursue ‘clean’ deals that do not involve bidding wars or become drawn out.”
Along with Pearce and Honigstein, Reddy concurred that the Reds’ “stance” is for one of their present midfielders to depart in order to make place for a new one.
For those hoping to see the Belgian go to Merseyside this summer, the asking price of £50 million is unlikely to be an amount Liverpool is willing to commit to for such a young talent.
If the Saints hold firm on the price, Lavia, who will be anxious to return to the top level, might force their hand in the upcoming weeks. Competitors for his signing, though, are probably also concerned about the price should Southampton hold their ground.
Despite being demoted to the Championship, the Saints still anticipate receiving a healthy price for Lavia, their best player. If Lavia says he wants to sign with Liverpool as his next club, the Reds might be able to negotiate a lower price.
Man City has a buyback option for the 19-year-old that takes effect next summer and is worth £40 million, which puts Southampton in a relatively advantageous negotiation position.
Liverpool is still interested in Lavia, but for a deal to be completed, there may need to be some compromise between the two parties.
