Liverpool could yet make an attempt to sign Chelsea centre-back Levi Colwill this summer.
The Reds have been linked with Colwill since midway through last season. However, Chelsea have been adamant that they will not sell the 20-year-old. And that’s a stance that the Evening Standard have reiterated today.
Brighton have so far been seen as the most likely destination for Colwill should he leave Stamford Bridge. However, the Standard claim that with the two clubs set to meet over Moises Caicedo in the coming days, any attempt to include Colwill in that deal will be rejected.
Despite this firm and public position though, rival bidders may not yet be put off. Liverpool and Manchester City are named as two who could still come in for the England U21 international.
Whether they do or not will perhaps depend on how the next few days go. Colwill reportedly has a contract offer on the table from Chelsea, but is waiting to speak with new manager Mauricio Pochettino before he signs up.
With Pochettino set to start work on Monday, the young defender is claimed to be seeking assurance over playing time. If it goes well, it looks like he signs on. If not, maybe Liverpool will sniff an opportunity.
Colwill waiting for crunch talks
If Colwill does become actively available this window, then it seems there will be quite the scramble to get him.
He has had a very good couple of seasons out on-loan. Last year he showed his class with Brighton in the Premier League, and was called ‘fantastic’ by Lewis O’Brien during his year at Huddersfield in 2021/22 [Yorkshire Live].
Jordan Henderson has been another to rave about Colwill, speaking in glowing terms about him during a recent camp with England.
But, if it’s game time the youngster is looking for, then he won’t find it right now at Liverpool. The Reds are definitely in the market for a left-footed centre-back in Colwill’s mould, but they’d be a longer term solution.
Virgil van Dijk isn’t going anywhere just yet and Ibrahima Konate is his clear partner for the time being.
If any left-sided defender does arrive at Anfield this summer, then they’re going to have to accept that.
Listening to the ins and outs of Colwill’s situation at Chelsea, we don’t see how his reservations would be eased by joining the Reds. That’s not to say we wouldn’t like to see it happen though, but let’s wait for the fall out with his talks with Poch before we get excited.
